Why I Coach

Updated: Aug 25, 2020

So this is it. Road Warrior Running is here. This program is something that on one hand is the culmination of years of hard work, years of blood, sweat and tears—while on the other hand, it’s the beginning of a completely new journey. A journey that has me ecstatic and yet anxious all at once. So let me start this by sharing with you what this is all about—what I am all about as a coach and why I’m a coach.

Over the years I’ve been fortunate to experience some incredible moments as a runner. Through all of the ups and downs, the improved health, the nagging injuries, the friendships, the rivalries, the doubt and devastation after an epic failure or the sense of accomplishment and the thrill of a BQ or a new PR, I’ve found that running has added a dimension to life that I just can’t imagine being without. One thing that has always been a consistent part of running for me has been the question, what’s next? Next race, next goal, next pair of shoes…you get it, we’re always planning and thinking about what’s next. And for me, the answer to that question quickly became coaching. With all that I’ve gained from running—and will continue to gain—it didn’t take long for me to develop a desire to share those incredible moments with others.

Early on, I spent a long time trying to figure this sport out on my own. I read books. I studied different training philosophies. I talked with other runners. And I learned (sometimes the hard way) which approaches worked well for me and which ones didn’t work so well. At one point, after achieving what was at the time a new marathon PR, my first thought was—if I can get this far on my own, how much better could I do if I worked with a coach? I quickly found out how much better I could do with the support of a coach who cared, who held me accountable and whose experience opened up concepts and ideas that I had never before considered.

So why do I coach? Put simply, I’m here to share these same things with you and give back to a running community that has been so incredibly great to be a part of.

Please feel free to reach out and share your story—I’d love to chat about how being a part of Road Warrior Running can help you along your own journey!
